When physician and infectious disease expert Jeanne Marrazzo was chosen as the new head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases last year, it was a historic moment: She’d be replacing Anthony Fauci after his nearly 40-year stint as director of the institute. Marrazzo, whose research focuses include HIV and other sexually transmitted infections, was hailed as a fitting choice to lead the $6.3 billion agency at a time when the U.S. is grappling with record STI rates along with ongoing public health and political fallout from the Covid-19 pandemic.
