In November 2015, STAT was launched as a new national media brand focused on health, medicine, and life sciences. Since then, we have grown to be the authoritative and trustworthy news media source in the industry and our all-star team of editors and reporters have won numerous journalism awards, including being named as a 2021 Pulitzer finalist. The STAT brand includes a website (www.statnews.com), mobile app, numerous newsletters, live events and virtual events, and other products. STAT is based in Boston and is affiliated with Boston Globe Media Partners but is independent from The Boston Globe.

The Role

STAT is looking for an accomplished, versatile editor to lead its business and policy teams.

This editor would have the skills to handle quick-turn news adroitly and drive deeper coverage, helping reporters conceive of and frame strong enterprise stories, including industry analyses, profiles, and hard-hitting investigations. Our business and Washington-based policy reporters make up small but close-knit teams that stand out for impactful exclusives, and we’re looking for an editor who can help them excel.

The ideal candidate will have at least eight years of experience in daily journalism, including having worked as an editor. You should have a deep background in health care news, preferably with experience in both business and policy. We’re looking for candidates who have a demonstrated ability to move beyond commodity news stories and press for fresh and provocative angles as well as embrace multimedia and all forms of digital storytelling. The role includes oversight of two newsletters.

We prefer the editor be based in Washington, but the editor must also be able to work closely with reporters across the country.

A collaborative spirit, flexibility, and a willingness to innovate are essential. Also essential: Fidelity to bedrock journalistic values and a commitment to excellence.

What You’ll Bring

  • At least eight years of experience in daily journalism, with a background in editing and reporting health and business stories.
  • An ability to make sure our coverage is accessible, fresh, and engaging as well as authoritative.
  • An entrepreneurial spirit and passion for collaboration with reporters and editing colleagues.
  • A willingness to adapt and be audience-focused, with a curious mindset and a commitment to creating an inclusive work environment.
  • A keen interest in helping further STAT’s business strategy of building a successful media company founded on readers paying for first-rate journalism.
