The “food is medicine” movement is gaining traction — and so is the work of cardiologist and nutrition professor Dariush Mozaffarian, who’s closely identified with the push to use healthy food as a health intervention. His scholarly papers are among the most highly cited in the world, according to a recent analysis of research published between 2012-2022, and he’s regularly quoted in outlets like the New York Times and WBUR weighing in on the health benefits of cocoa and salmon and why cheese shouldn’t be demonized. And in a sign of policymakers’ growing interest in food’s potential to prevent and treat disease, Mozaffarian was appointed to the President’s Council on Sports, Fitness, & Nutrition in 2023.
